Exploring the History of Poker

When it comes to poker, it wasn’t always the game we play today, filled with full houses and royal flushes. The game has actually transformed throughout history and has come a long way to become the exciting card game we love to go all in on.

History of Poker

Now despite it being around for quite some time, where poker originated from is still unclear. Some say that the game got its start as a card game form of dominos in 10th century China, according to The History Channel, while others claim that poker is a descendant of a Persian card game known as “As Nas,” which was created in the 16th century.

From there it evolved and spread across different countries and eventually made its way to Spain where the game “primero” was created. This early version of poker featured three cards dealt to each player and the creation of bluffing to sway the betting. Germany and France soon caught on to this game, creating their own respective versions, “pochen” and “poque,” in the 17th and 18th centuries.

French colonists then brought the game to their settlements in North America, specifically New Orleans, where the game took its final transformations to become the game we know today, says Poker.com. Once that area was bought by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase, poker gained popularity along the Mississippi River due to riverboat sailors playing it at stops along their routes. From there on, the popularity continued to grow, different versions were created and the game spread across the country for everyone to enjoy.
